Teaching Approach
plan β teach β practise β assess β support β review. π 1. Term structure At the beginning of the term: 1. Check the curriculum/syllabus β identify the topics and learning objectives. 2. Break the term into units/topics β decide what should be taught each week. 3. Prepare a scheme of work β weekly topics, objectives, activities, resources and assessment. 4. Plan assessments β quizzes, classwork, projects, tests and end-of-term assessment. 5. Allow flexibility β keep some time for revision, catch-up and learners who need extra support. π§βπ« 2. Individual lesson structure A typical 40β60 minute lesson could be: 1. Introduction / Starter β 5β10 min Greeting and settling learners Review the previous lesson Ask a few questions or give a quick activity Introduce today's topic 2. Learning objective β 2 min Tell learners clearly: > βBy the end of today's lesson, you should be able toβ¦β 3. Teaching / Explanation β 10β15 min Explain the new concept Demonstrate examples Use pictures, real objects, stories or technology where appropriate 4. Guided practice β 10β15 min Teacher and learners work together Ask questions Check understanding Correct misconceptions 5. Independent practice β 10β15 min Learners work individually or in pairs/groups while you observe and support them. 6. Assessment / Plenary β 5 min Short questions Quick exercise Ask learners to explain what they learned 7. Homework / Extension Give a suitable follow-up task where necessary. β For primary learners I would particularly focus on active learning, rather than making the lesson mostly teacher talk: Engage β Explain β Demonstrate β Practise β Apply β Assess And throughout the lesson I would differentiate for: Learners who need additional support Learners working at the expected level Fast/advanced learners who need extension activities If you're preparing for a primary-school teaching interview, this is also a strong way to answer the question βHow do you usually structure your lessons or term?β
